Cold sore: how to recognize it and what helps

Itching, blisters, and a scab on the lip? That is most often a cold sore. See how to recognize it and what you can do at the first signs.

What is a cold sore?

A cold sore is a viral infection (HSV-1) that appears as itching, blisters, and scabs on the lip. It usually occurs in the same place and disappears within 7–10 days.

What helps with cold sores?

  • act at the first signs (itching, tightness)
  • do not touch the blisters
  • maintain hand hygiene
  • local application to the affected area

The course can be shortened if you act early enough.

How does a cold sore start?

Herpes

A cold sore almost always begins with mild itching or a burning sensation in one spot. Within a few hours, blisters appear, which then burst and form a scab.

It usually resolves on its own within 7–10 days, but it can also last 10–14 days. Acting early can significantly shorten the course.

Other issues can also appear in the oral cavity, such as gum inflammation, mouth ulcers, or sore throat, which may have similar symptoms but different causes.

How to recognize a cold sore?

A cold sore most often appears in roughly the same spot. It develops in several stages:

Initial phase (itching and burning)

In one spot on the lip, itching, tightness, or mild pain appears.

Blisters

Small fluid-filled blisters appear. This is the stage when the cold sore is most contagious.

Rupture and scab

The blisters burst, forming a sore that gradually dries and becomes covered with a scab.

Healing

When the scab falls off, the skin heals.

If you act already in the initial phase, the cold sore often develops in a milder form.

What does a first herpes infection look like?

During the first herpes infection, the course is often different compared to later outbreaks.

In children, especially younger ones, a condition called gingivostomatitis may occur, affecting the gums and oral mucosa. slinavka (gingivostomatitis), kjer so prizadete dlesni in sluznica ust. Pojavijo se:

  • painful sores in the mouth
  • swollen and bleeding gums
  • elevated body temperature
  • difficulty eating

In such cases, the course can be more severe and require more attention, as the child often has difficulty drinking or eating.

During the first infection, treatment is not always aimed at “stopping the herpes”, but primarily at relieving symptoms.

Why does herpes occur?

Herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). After the first infection, the virus remains in the body and can reactivate under certain conditions.

Reactivation is most often triggered by:

  • a weakened immune system
  • stress
  • a cold or flu
  • sun exposure
  • fatigue

That is why herpes often appears when the body is already under strain.

Where can herpes appear?

Herpes most commonly appears on the lips, but it can also occur:

  • on the nose
  • on the lip border
  • on the facial skin
  • less commonly in the oral cavity

It usually appears in the same place where it has occurred before.

How to prevent recurrent cold sores?

Since the virus remains in the body after the first infection, cold sores can recur.

The frequency of outbreaks can be reduced by:

  • getting enough rest
  • reducing stress
  • protecting the lips from the sun
  • supporting the immune system

For people who frequently get cold sores, it is useful to identify personal triggers.

Što pomaže kod herpesa na usnici?

It is important to act within the first hours, as the effect is greatest then. The best results are achieved if you act already in the itching phase, before blisters appear. With cold sores, early action is key.

Basic measures

  • do not touch the blisters
  • do not pick or remove the scab
  • maintain hand hygiene

Local action

Since a cold sore appears directly on the mucosa or skin of the lip, products for local use can help.

They act directly on the affected area, reduce discomfort, and support healing.

It is best to start at the first signs (itching, tightness).

Example of local application of a cream for a cold sore

What should you avoid doing with a cold sore?

  • do not pop the blisters
  • do not remove the scab
  • do not share glasses, utensils, or towels
  • do not apply aggressive substances to the affected area

This can prolong healing or spread the infection.

User experience

I have had Herpesoutbreaks several times. I tried Smrekovit twice, and after three days only a trace of herpes remained. Smrekovit is excellent!

[45] Facebook feedback

I used Smrekovit for a cold sore when it had already appeared. I applied it around it and a kind of film formed that peeled off, while at the same time the condition improved quickly… I used it twice a day, in the morning and in the evening…

Smrekovit really helps me a lot with cold sore outbreaks. My daughter and I both tried it, and it helped both of us.
