Smrekovit products have also been used on animals for many years. For most conditions, the basic principles of use are similar to those for people. The main differences concern the method of application, the size of the area, the presence of fur and the possibility of licking.
We have the most practical experience with use on cows, horses, dogs and cats. On animals, Smrekovit is most commonly applied to the skin, udder, injured and strained areas, damaged skin and joints.
The SmrekoVET range was created primarily to provide larger and more economical packages for users who apply the product frequently or use it on larger animals.

Packages for smaller animals
For dogs, cats, smaller animals and use on smaller areas, a large package is often unnecessary.
In such cases, the following are often more practical:
- Smrekovit Klasik,
- Smrekovit 365 Prima
Which animals is it used for?
Cows
In cows, Smrekovit is most commonly applied to:
- the udder and udder skin,
- teats,
- damaged areas of skin,
- joints and other strained areas.
Most of our practical experience relates specifically to use on the udder. Early action at the first signs of changes and monitoring the animal’s general condition are particularly important.
A veterinary examination is required in cases of high temperature, significant deterioration or poor general condition.
Horses
In horses, Smrekovit is most commonly applied to:
- injured areas,
- the skin,
- damaged skin,
- joints and muscles,
- areas around the head where insects bother the animal.
Care should be taken when applying the product around the eyes to prevent it from coming into direct contact with the eye.
Dogs
In dogs, Smrekovit is most commonly applied to:
- the skin and between the toes,
- localized areas of altered skin,
- damaged skin,
- joints,
- injured or strained areas.
In older dogs, it is often applied to the joint areas. Because of the fur, it is important that the product actually reaches the skin and does not remain only on the surface of the coat.
Cats
In cats, Smrekovit is mainly applied to:
- small areas of skin,
- injured areas,
- damaged skin,
- areas between the toes,
- other localized areas of altered skin.
Because cats spend a lot of time grooming, it is advisable to apply a small amount directly to the affected area and monitor how much of the product they remove by licking.
Other animals
Smrekovit is also used on other domestic and farm animals.
When choosing the product and method of application, the following factors are more important than the animal species itself:
- where the product is applied,
- the size of the area,
- whether fur is present,
- whether the animal licks the area,
- whether the area can be covered.
Most common areas of use
Smrekovit is often applied to the udder and udder skin in cows. After milking, it is applied evenly to the selected area.
A veterinary examination is required in cases of elevated temperature, poor general condition or rapid deterioration.
Udder
When applying the product to skin covered with fur, it is important that the product reaches the skin directly. Thick or long fur should be parted or, if necessary, trimmed over a small area.
If the product remains only on the fur, it does not reach the intended application site.
Skin and fur
Smrekovit Klasik is applied directly to the selected area of skin. When covering the area is practical, sterile non-woven gauze and a suitable method of securing it that does not restrict circulation may also be used.
Deep injuries, heavy bleeding, bites and rapid deterioration require veterinary treatment.
Damaged skin
Smrekovit products are also used on the areas of joints, muscles and other strained parts of the body, particularly in older dogs, horses and other larger animals.
The product is applied regularly and directly to the selected area. If a more serious injury is suspected, veterinary diagnosis is required.

How to apply SmrekoVET correctly?
Reach the skin
Part thick or long fur. If necessary, trim it over a small area so that the product does not remain only on the fur.
Apply directly to the selected area
Apply the product evenly and directly to the skin or selected area. Adjust the amount according to the size of the area.
Repeat the application as needed.
If the animal removes the product by licking, rubbing or moving, repeat the application as needed. With larger animals and larger areas, even and regular application is particularly important. Apply the product evenly and directly to the skin or selected area. Adjust the amount according to the size of the area.
Cover the area when appropriate
To help the product remain on the selected area for longer, you can cover it after application with clean gauze or another breathable material. The covering should be loose enough not to restrict the animal or irritate the skin. With larger animals, check regularly that the dressing remains in place and replace it as needed.
What if the animal licks the product?
Licking is usually not a major concern for most animals. Smrekovit Klasik has a greasy, hydrophobic base, so licking often spreads it further over the area rather than removing it completely.
If the animal removes most of the product, repeat the application as needed. Areas that the animal frequently licks or rubs should be checked more regularly.
Practical experience
Knowledge about the use of Smrekovit in animals is based primarily on many years of experience from farmers and animal owners.
The most frequently reported experiences relate to use:
- on the udder in cows,
- for injuries and wounds,
- on the joints of older animals,
- on the skin and between the toes in dogs and cats,
- on horses in areas where insects cause irritation.
The response is not the same in every animal or for every condition. It is important to monitor actual progress and make an honest assessment of whether the application produces a noticeable difference.
SmrekoVET is not a veterinary medicine and does not replace a veterinary examination, diagnosis or necessary treatment.
We have been using Smrekovit from the very beginning. It is indispensable both at home for people and on our dairy cows. We notice that the somatic cell count decreases within a few days, which we confirm by sending samples to a veterinary laboratory. Since we started using Smrekovit, excessively high somatic cell counts have become rare.
I use spruce resin ointment for teat injuries in dairy cows. Healing is faster and more effective.
My dog had a recurring fungal problem on his right paw every three or four months. After walks, I washed his paw and applied Smrekovit. I soon noticed that the small wound had healed and that he had stopped licking his paw. The problem then did not return for four to five months.
Horses are also very pleased, as Smrekovit ointment helps keep flies away from sensitive areas.
When is a veterinarian needed?
A veterinary examination is particularly necessary:
- in cases of high or rising body temperature,
- when the animal lies down and cannot get up, is severely weakened or unresponsive,
- for deep injuries or heavy bleeding,
- for bites,
- if a fracture or another serious injury is suspected,
- if redness or swelling spreads rapidly,
- if foul-smelling discharge comes from the injured area,
- if the animal does not eat or drink,
- if the condition deteriorates rapidly or does not improve despite use,
- when the cause of the problem is unclear.
Using Smrekovit and seeking veterinary treatment are not mutually exclusive. Smrekovit may be used as a complementary measure, but it does not replace veterinary diagnosis or necessary treatment.
Frequently asked questions
Is SmrekoVET Klasik different from Smrekovit Klasik?
No. The composition is the same. SmrekoVET Klasik differs mainly in its large 2500 ml package and labelling adapted for use on animals.
Do I need to buy the large package for a dog or cat?
No. For smaller animals and smaller areas, the standard smaller packages of Smrekovit Klasik or Smrekovit 365 Prima are usually more practical.
Can it be used on different animal species?
Yes. We have the most experience with cows, horses, dogs and cats, but it is also used on other domestic and farm animals.
Can it be applied to fur?
The product must reach the skin. If it remains only on the fur, the application is significantly less effective and makes little sense.
What should I do if the animal licks the product?
Repeat the application as needed. If the animal licks the area intensively, you can temporarily protect it when this is safe and practical.
Can it be used on wounds?
Smrekovit Klasik can be used on damaged skin and wounds. Whenever possible, apply it to sterile non-woven gauze. Deep, heavily bleeding or infected wounds require a veterinary examination.
How quickly can I expect to see a difference?
It depends on the condition. With acute changes, a clear trend is often visible within a few days. Joints, larger injuries and chronic conditions require more time to assess.
Does SmrekoVET replace veterinary treatment?
No. It is intended for external use on animals. Serious, rapidly progressing or unclear conditions require veterinary diagnosis.
