Simple measures are usually the most useful,\n    and you can choose what feels most comfortable.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <h3>Basic measures<\/h3>\n  <ul>\n    <li><strong>Drink plenty of fluids.<\/strong> Choose cool or warm drinks depending on what feels better.<\/li>\n    <li><strong>Rest<\/strong> and avoid cigarette smoke and other irritants.<\/li>\n    <li><strong>Gargling with warm salt water<\/strong> may temporarily soothe irritation in adults and older children.<\/li>\n    <li><strong>Soft or cool foods<\/strong> may be easier to tolerate when swallowing is painful.<\/li>\n  <\/ul>\n\n  <h3>Pain relief<\/h3>\n  <p>\n    For more pronounced pain or fever, <strong>paracetamol or, if suitable for you, ibuprofen<\/strong>\n    may be used. Always follow the instructions and any restrictions that apply to the medicine.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Medicated lozenges containing a local anaesthetic, anti-inflammatory or antiseptic ingredient\n    may reduce pain slightly, although their effect is usually modest.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <h3>Antibiotics are not the usual solution for a sore throat<\/h3>\n  <p>\n    Most acute sore throats are caused by viruses and antibiotics do not help in these cases.\n    Antibiotics may be appropriate for certain bacterial infections when a clinician decides,\n    based on symptoms, examination and testing where needed, that they are indicated.\n  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"zakaj-nastane-bolece-grlo\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Zakaj nastane bole\u010de grlo?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"translation-block\">\n  <p>\n    A sore throat develops when the lining of the throat becomes inflamed or irritated.\n    <strong>Viral infections are the most common cause<\/strong>, but a sore throat is not always\n    caused by an infection.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <h3>Infections<\/h3>\n  <p>\n    Colds, flu and other viral infections often cause a sore throat together with cough,\n    a runny nose, hoarseness or general malaise. In such cases, fever and\n    other typical signs of an acute infection may be absent.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <h3>Persistent irritation and reflux<\/h3>\n  <p>\n    If a sore or irritated throat keeps returning or lasts for a longer period, other causes\n    should also be considered. One of these is <strong>acid reflux<\/strong>, which may also be\n    associated with cough, hoarseness or throat irritation.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    When advising users, one of the first distinctions we make is between an\n    <strong>acute problem and persistent irritation<\/strong>. However, <strong>severe one-sided pain that is rapidly worsening<\/strong>,\n    especially with swelling in the mouth or throat, difficulty opening the mouth, a changed\n    voice or difficulty swallowing, needs prompt medical assessment. These symptoms can also\n    occur with rarer complications such as a peritonsillar abscess.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <h3>Sore throat when swallowing<\/h3>\n  <p>\n    Pain when swallowing is one of the most common symptoms of an inflamed or irritated throat\n    and may occur with both viral and bacterial infections. On its own, it does not identify\n    the cause.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Sometimes the source of the pain is more localised. <strong>An <a href=\"\/afte-v-ustih\/\">aphthous ulcer<\/a>\n    located further back in the mouth or near the entrance to the throat can cause marked pain,\n    particularly when swallowing<\/strong>, and may feel like the pain is coming from the throat itself.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    It is important to distinguish <strong>painful swallowing from being unable to swallow<\/strong>.\n    If a person cannot swallow fluids or saliva, is drooling, has difficulty breathing or is\n    deteriorating rapidly, urgent medical attention is required.\n  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"koliko-casa-traja-bolece-grlo\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Koliko \u010dasa traja bole\u010de grlo?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"translation-block\">\n  <p>\n    <strong>An acute sore throat usually lasts from a few days to around one week.<\/strong>\n    Most people gradually improve within this time, including many cases in which the cause\n    may be bacterial but antibiotics are not needed.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    More important than the exact number of days is <strong>how the symptoms are progressing<\/strong>.\n    The pain should gradually lessen. If it has not started to improve after about a week,\n    becomes significantly worse or important new symptoms appear, medical assessment is advisable.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    If symptoms last longer or keep returning, the cause may no longer be a typical acute\n    infection. Other possibilities include recurrent inflammation, persistent irritation,\n    allergies or reflux.\n  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"dolgotrajno-ali-ponavljajoce-se-bolece-grlo\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dolgotrajno ali ponavljajo\u010de se bole\u010de grlo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"translation-block\">\n  <p>\n    If a sore throat <strong>lasts longer than the usual course of an acute illness or keeps returning<\/strong>,\n    it is not useful to assume that every episode is simply another infection. It becomes important\n    to look at when the symptoms occur, what accompanies them and whether there is a recurring pattern.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <h3>What can cause persistent throat irritation?<\/h3>\n  <p>\n    Possible causes include recurrent infections, dry or polluted air, smoking, allergies or\n    post-nasal drip, heavy voice use and <strong><a href=\"\/bolecine-v-zelodcu\/\">acid reflux<\/a><\/strong>.\n    Reflux does not always cause typical heartburn; it may also be associated with throat irritation,\n    hoarseness or a recurrent cough.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <h3>The pattern of symptoms matters<\/h3>\n  <p>\n    It can be useful to notice whether the throat is worse in the morning, after meals, when lying down,\n    in a particular environment, during allergy season or after heavy use of the voice. Such a pattern\n    may help a clinician identify the cause more than the fact that the throat is sore by itself.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <h3>What do we look for when advising users?<\/h3>\n  <p>\n    With persistent symptoms, one of the first questions we ask is whether these are truly repeated\n    acute infections or <strong>ongoing or recurrent irritation<\/strong>. Particularly when cough,\n    hoarseness or digestive symptoms are also present, our practical experience is to consider reflux\n    as one of the possibilities. This is a useful clue, not a diagnosis.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    <strong>A persistent unexplained sore throat should be medically assessed.<\/strong> Assessment is\n    particularly important if there is difficulty swallowing, persistent hoarseness, a lump or swelling\n    in the neck or mouth, unexplained weight loss, or another new or progressively worsening symptom.\n  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"bolece-grlo-pri-otroku\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bole\u010de grlo pri otroku<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"translation-block\">\n  <p>\n    <strong>Viruses are also the most common cause of sore throat in children.<\/strong>\n    Streptococcal throat infection is more common in children than in adults, particularly\n    between about 5 and 15 years of age. Typical strep throat is much less common in children\n    younger than 3 years.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <h3>When should strep throat be considered?<\/h3>\n  <p>\n    A sudden sore throat, fever, marked pain when swallowing, enlarged lymph nodes at the front\n    of the neck, and red or enlarged tonsils with exudate can make streptococcal infection more\n    likely. Children may also develop <strong>abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting or a rash<\/strong>.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Cough, a runny nose, hoarseness and oral ulcers are more suggestive of a viral infection.\n    When the features are not clear, looking at the throat alone cannot reliably distinguish\n    the cause; a clinician may use a rapid strep test or throat culture where appropriate.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <h3>Keeping a child hydrated is particularly important<\/h3>\n  <p>\n    With mild illness, the child should drink plenty of fluids and rest. Cool drinks or soft\n    foods may be easier to tolerate when swallowing is painful. Being unable to swallow fluids\n      or one&#8217;s own saliva is not a symptom that should simply be monitored at home.\n    <\/li>\n\n    <li>\n      <strong>Marked drooling.<\/strong>\n      Drooling, particularly together with difficulty swallowing or breathing,\n      is a warning sign and needs prompt medical assessment.\n    <\/li>\n\n    <li>\n      <strong>Rapid deterioration or severe one-sided pain and swelling.<\/strong>\n      Rapidly increasing pain, swelling in the mouth or throat, difficulty opening\n      the mouth or a changed voice are particularly important.
